Meet These Dragons & Fantasy Worlds!

After Discovering the World of Linaria, We Had to Talk to Self Published Fantasy Author, MacRae, About Her Dragons and Worlds for Chapter 1 of the Faelings Oracle!

World of Linaria

World of Linaria book one by L L MacRae

“The World of Linaria Quintet is my debut series. It's an epic fantasy, multi-POV series with dragons, airships, and sky pirates.

I was of course inspired by Final Fantasy, and wanted to create my own cast of rag-tag characters thrown in together, epic battles in the sky and on the ground, and some of the greatest dragon “hunts” ever. There are four novels out so far (and one prequel novella), with just the fifth and final book to go.

Imagine epic fantasy with a slight steampunk flavour (with the flying ships, cannons, trains etc.), and a story about finding your power and taking it back.”

“It has classic elements of good vs evil, but the longer you spend in the world, the more you realise those lines are blurred - or completely different, depending on which side you stand on.

There are multiple races, including a couple different types of shapeshifters, multiple magic systems, and is a light-hearted adventure fantasy at its core. It’s also completely romance-free! It was my debut, so it’s definitely more on the unpolished side in terms of intricate plotting, but it is a tonne of fun!”

Dragon Spirits

Dragon Spirits book one by L L MacRae

“The Dragon Spirits Trilogy is my current epic fantasy series, with dragons, spirits, and curses.

We have a lot of found family vibes here, a corruption arc, and so many dragons in this magic-drenched world. I love magical artefacts and ancient evils, and both feature heavily.

Book one, The Iron Crown, was also a finalist in SPFBO7, and The Broken Binding created a limited collector’s edition of it back in 2023! Like Linaria, there is also a prequel novella to this series, set five years before events of the first book.”

“Dragon Spirits is a bit more classic-feeling fantasy. It’s a darker, more mature trilogy, with spirits of life and death, ancient artefacts rising, and the people caught in between. There are a lot of messy family dynamics and characters who have experienced trauma (and deal with it in different ways), but a lot of heart.

I wanted to marry my love of Ghibli films (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away), with a huge nature element, along with my love of dragons!”

Shadowlight

Shadowlight book by L L MacRae

Shadowlight is something completely different. It’s a serial, with three rotating POV characters, and no strong plotting - just let's see where this adventure takes us!

Set in a world stripped of all light and colour.”

There are phoenixes, dragons and mages.

“The sun hasn’t risen in hundreds of years, and the blighted lands have forced the last bastions of humanity into cities protected by phoenix and dragonfire.

It’s an unbelievable amount of fun to write, and I’m loving exploring automatons, sentinels, and all types of alchemical weaponry as we dive into the frozen, blighted lands.”
